What legal translation is

Legal translation is the translation of documents that have legal effect or will be read by a court, a regulator or the other side's lawyers. The translator has to carry over what each clause means under the law it was written for, keep defined terms consistent, and avoid wording that changes the obligations.

That's why we don't use general translators for this work, and why every legal document gets a second check by another legal linguist before it goes back to you.

The details legal teams ask about first.

  • Same layout as the original. Numbering, tables, signatures and stamps placed where they are in the source.
  • Your defined terms. We build a term list from the document and your glossary and use it throughout.
  • Bilingual versions. Side-by-side Word files for negotiation or signing, if you need them.
  • Urgent work. Tell us the hearing or signing date. We'll tell you straight away what's possible.

Questions about legal translation

What is legal translation?

Legal translation is translating documents that have legal effect, such as contracts, court papers, certificates and regulations. It needs a translator who understands both legal systems, because a word-for-word translation can change what a clause means.

How much does it cost to translate a legal document?

Legal translation is priced by word count, language pair and deadline. Short certificates are usually priced per document. You get a fixed price in writing before any work starts.

Can machine translation be used for legal contracts?

Not on its own. Machine translation can get legal terms and defined terms wrong without any sign that it has. If a contract will be signed or relied on, it needs a legal translator and a second check.

Do you keep legal documents confidential?

Yes. We sign your NDA before you send anything, only the linguists and project manager on your job open the files, and everyone on our team works under a written confidentiality agreement.

Can you translate documents for a court hearing at short notice?

Often, yes. Send the documents and the hearing date, and we'll tell you straight away whether we can deliver in time and how we'd split the work.
