Three choices to make before translating into German

First, formal or informal: German readers expect Sie from banks, insurers and B2B suppliers, and du from many apps and consumer brands. Second, the market: Swiss German spelling drops ß, and Austria uses some of its own words, such as Jänner for January. Third, space: German often runs 10 to 30% longer than English, with long compound words that don't always fit buttons, tables and slides.

We settle the first two in the quote and plan for the third in layout, so your German doesn't need fixing after delivery.

Questions about German translation

Should we use Sie or du in German?

Use Sie for business, finance, legal and most B2B content, and du for apps, retail and brands that talk informally in English. The important thing is to choose one and use it everywhere, which we agree before translation starts.

Do you translate for Switzerland and Austria?

Yes. For Switzerland, we use Swiss spelling without ß and Swiss terms where they differ. For Austria, we adapt vocabulary where Austrian readers expect it.

Do you translate German into English?

Yes. Native English translators translate German documents into English, and a second linguist checks them.

How much does German translation cost?

German translation is priced by word count, subject and deadline. Repeated text costs less with translation memory. You get a fixed price in writing before work starts.
